چکیده
OBJECTIVE To verify changes in placental morphology of small for gestational age newborns, considering that the occurrence of placental alterations is more frequent in small for gestational age (SGA) infants than in appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants. METHODS Fifty SGA newborns were included in a cross-sectional study, which involved gross anatomy and light microscopy of placenta, membranes and umbilical cord. An equal size sample of randomized AGA newborns was used. All children were born at Maternidade Terezinha de Jesus, Juiz de Fora-MG, between February and November, 1996. After an informed consent was given by the mothers, the newborns were weighted at birth with assessment of length and head circumference. Every child's placenta, membranes and umbilical cord were sent to the laboratory of histology and embryology of the Department of Morphology of Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora and Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. RESULTS Placentas of SGA newborns differed significantly with greater incidence of chorioamnionitis, placental infarction, extensive perivillous fibrin deposition and multiple foci of parabasal chronic villitis. They were also lighter and had smaller diameters. Placentary index (placental weight/newborńs weight ratio) was also significantly greater, indicating that although both placenta and small for gestational age newborn presented low weight, placentas impairment was smaller. CONCLUSIONS Placentas of small for gestational age newborns differed significantly if compared to those of adequate gestational age.

Comparative Assessment of Ultrasound Placental Findings in Small for Gestational Age and Normal-Weight Fetuses
Background Small for gestational age (SGA) refers to newborns whose birth weight is less than the 10th percentile for gestational age. The aim of this study was to provide a comparative assessment of ultrasound placental findings in SGA and normal-weight fetuses in singleton pregnant women. Materials and Methods In...
متن کاملExtensive shift in placental transcriptome profile in preeclampsia and placental origin of adverse pregnancy outcomes
One in five pregnant women suffer from gestational complications, prevalently driven by placental malfunction. Using RNASeq, we analyzed differential placental gene expression in cases of normal gestation, late-onset preeclampsia (LO-PE), gestational diabetes (GD) and pregnancies ending with the birth of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) or large-for-gestational-age (LGA) newborns (n = 8/group). ...
متن کاملPlacental vascular endothelial growth factor expression in pregnancies complicated by type 1 diabetes.
UNLABELLED Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is still associated with increased risk of severe maternal and foetal complications but their pathomechanism remains unclear. OBJECTIVES we investigated the possible role of placental vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in foetal development in T1DM pregnancies. Sixty seven pregnant women with T1DM...

OBJECTIVES The current study sought to identify macroscopic placental changes associated with clinical conditions in women with or without diabetes and their newborns. METHODS The study population consisted of 62 pregnant women clinically diagnosed with diabetes and 62 healthy women (control group). RESULTS Among the subjects with diabetes, 43 women (69.3%) were diagnosed with gestational d...

Background: Respiratory Syncytical virus infection is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and viral pneumonia in infancy. Objective: To investigate the placental transfer of RSV-specific IgG in Iranian mothers. Methods: The antibodies were measured in sera of 146 mother/newborn pairs using a commercially available indirect Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The studied subjects were ...
